"I LOVED this book!" ~ review

There’s no word for someone like me.

If the crash that ended Tom’s life had happened five weeks later, I’d be a widow.

Instead?  I’m just … tragic.  My happily ever after was ripped away before it even had the chance to start.

It’s been a year since fate took him away from me.  And my best friend Amy is convinced that I’m stuck, refusing to move on.  Since I won’t go to a grief support group, which was her first suggestion, she’s decided I need a hot, dirty fling.  To move on and get back to living again instead of just existing.

She calls it rebound therapy.

I call it a load of crap.  But there’s no arguing with her once she gets an idea in her head.  And going out for drinks with my friend isn’t a bad way to spend an evening, even if I know she's going to be scoping out all the available men in our vicinity.

What I don’t expect is to actually meet one.  But Brian slips past all my defenses.  Sexy and sweet, he makes me leave behind the sad, depressed girl I’d become, bringing me to life again.

Until a cruel reminder of what really happened the night Tom died slaps me in the face.  How can I ever get past that?

*Rebound Therapy is a sexy, sweet standalone about starting over and learning to love again.  If you love angsty reads that hit you in all the feels but leave you with a smile on your face, grab this book now!

Rebound Therapy is such a beautifully written story! Jerica MacMillan handles the subject of loss, grief, and moving forward with one’s life as if she were offering us a delicate china cup filled to the brim with fragrant, earthy tea; with grace, respect, and wonder. And yet all it takes is one sip for us to figure out she’s spiked our Earl Gray! Thus ends my Zen-like rambling. In case, you didn’t get it, what all that meant was there’s a lot more to Rebound Therapy than meets the eye. I love how the absolute ease with which this story unfolds contrasts with its intensity as well as the depth of her characters.

A year has come and gone since Jenna’s fiance Tom was killed in an accident. Logically, she knows she needs to move on with her life, however, that pit of grief and guilt is damn hard to climb out of. Her best friend Amy has been patiently nudging her along for months. Jenna may not want to admit it, but she might actually be ready to put herself out in the dating world again. Her only other option is therapy, which she’d rather avoid. But dating? Isn't that betraying Tom? They were about to be married! How will it ever be possible not to feel guilty? Jenna’s thoughts and feelings are conveyed so well, it was easy for me to put myself in her shoes, and wonder how I would deal with such a dilemma. It’s definitely a tough call. Especially when she feels an immediate attraction to Brian, owner of the wine bar Amy drags her to one night.

I love that Brian instinctively knows how to handle Jenna without walking on eggshells. He’s respectful of her past but makes it clear he wants to be involved. Even though Brian is merely supposed to be Jenna’s “rebound therapy”, it quickly escalates to something deeper. Instead of triggering painful memories, their time together creates exciting new ones. The chemistry between them is more explosive than what she had with Tom and the sex… Let’s just say, Brian’s desire for her is all consuming. It’s like nothing she’s ever felt before.

Rebound Therapy is not all smooth sailing. It is, after all about finding oneself after a tragedy. Bit it’s also about enjoying the new that comes into your life rather than comparing it to what was. It’s about letting go of the guilt society expects us to hang onto. Ms. MacMillan has given us a touching story with the added bonus of humor and fun that will leave you with good feels and, most of all, hope.

Rebound Therapy Rebound Series Book 1 edition by Jerica MacMillan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Rebound Therapy is the perfect type of romance novel -- at least in my humble opinion.

It starts out on a sad note, with Jenna, the main character, who has suffered a tragic loss. She is in grief, and this book takes the brave step of showing us her grief, and showing it right away.

But this is not a story about grief. It is a story about recovery.

Jenna's best friend Amy, the kind of best friend you wish you had, talks her into one of two choices find a rebound guy, or go to group therapy. Not wanting to overshare in a group, Jenna chooses a quick date.

She visits a wine bar and meets Brian, the owner. And then the story begins.

This is a sweet romance, but also VERY HOT in some places. It has references to the Princess Bride, Rocky Horror, and other cultural references that amused me greatly.

And it's really well written. The emotions are honest, the characters are true, and it's complicated. It's not all perfect. But it is very real and, in a way, its own sort of therapy.

Check it out!!!! 5 stars
Friendly, supportive, understanding, sensitive, responsive, emotionally mature, and fun = Brian
Stubborn and determined to keep a firm, two-handed grip on her angst so she could wring every last tear drop out of it = Jenna.

It obviously never occurred to Jenna that her late fiance might have been attracted to her because her outlook on life was so totally different from that of his parents. She just accepted that misery should be her lot in life cuz his mama said so. When life presented a chance to recapture the happiness she thought was lost, she let it go because she didn't deserve it? Loss and grief are rough, hard, and painful, but wallowing in those feelings does not make them easier to bear. She spent all her time holding on to bad memories, and no time thinking about good ones. She made me tired.

The three stars go to Brian and to Jenna's friend Amy for pushing Debbie Downer to let go of the self-imposed misery. If anybody deserved the HEA, it would be Amy, so I will read her story and hope for the best.

Cat
Let me start off by saying I hate it when people try to push loved ones to get over their grief...no matter how much time has passed, I don't think you get to tell someone what to do with how they feel. You can suggest support groups, or counseling, or "getting back out there", but you just can't insist that someone deals with their grief the way you want them to. We all hate seeing the people we love sad and struggling, but unless they are harming themselves or a potential danger to others, then let them deal the way they want. Okay, done with that.

Poor Jenna! She really is stuck. I don't totally agree with all of Amy's methods, but I get her concern for her friend Jenna. I do admire the way she's there for Jenna, and that Amy always has Jenna's back. She comforts her, and tells her the truth--no holds barred.

Jenna lost her fiancee' in a terrible accident. She blames herself, his parents blame her-it's just too much.

Enter Brian. He's kind and understanding. She has fun with him, and he's good for her. Brian makes her forget about the tragic loss of her fiancee'. Unfortunately, something happens, and Jenna believes it's confirmation that she doesn't deserve happiness. It's not right, but it's what and how she feels. Much like Amy, I wanted to shake some sense into Jenna, get her to understand how wrong that is--but again, it's how she feels.

This was a pretty good story. You'll feel a lot of things as the story moves forward--sad, relieved, frustrated, angry, happy.
